Summer Fishing
Summer is heating up and so is the fishing! We are having outstanding days on both the smallmouth rivers and our trout streams. For trout fishing, the tailwaters are the place to be. Both the Watauga and South Holston Rivers are producing quality and quantity on our float trips.
he trout are eating mayflies and terrestrials all day long! Sulfer mayflies #16 will bring the trout to the surface on the South Holston and Watauga right now and if they are not taking them off the surface, try dropping a small pheasant tail off the back a few feet and use that sulfer dun as your strike indicator.
TVA has been fairly consistant with their water flows, and their release is definitely an important factor in planning your day. When they have their generators shut off has definitely been the optimal time to be on the water over there. Any small stream will produce good numbers of trout as well, just don't expect the size of trout that you will see on the tailwaters- unless you are into harassing the pellet fed pet fish of the Davidson River.
Big stoneflies and green drakes are out on the creeks, so use big attractors on the surface and get ready to have a blast! If they are not rising for whatever reason, try dropping a bead head prince nymph or pheasant tail #14 or #16 off the back.
From a guide's perspective, the smallmouth bass fishing has been the best bang for the buck. This is the time for catching both big fish and lots of fish. They are post spawn now, so the big boys and girls are back out in the river packing on the lbs. Crawfish and shad seem to be the two main food sources right now. The fish are very spread out, so try and cover every scenerio- deep runs, shallow riffles, pocket water behind rocks, and the shady banks.
This is the beginning of some great river fishing yet to come. Give us a call to set up your next fishing adventure!
